Hi Everyone, Maamawi Collective is so pleased to have received positive comments from Uxbridge Township residents, regarding our electronic sign acknowledging National Indigenous Peoples Day, after driving past it while coming into the south end of town on Highway 47. The sign carried our message last year as well, bringing a new member to Maamawi Collective’s eight-member administrative circle. Canada’s Truth and Recognition Commission was completed in June 2015, accompanied by 94 Calls to Action and a six-volume report published in December 2015. Maamawi Collective has adopted one of these Calls to Action as our mission statement: “To Create and Promote Public Dialogue, Public/Private Partnerships, and Public Initiatives for Reconciliation”, outlined in Call to Action #53, section #4. We encourage our neighbours to visit our website to see what we have achieved, since we created Maamawi Collective in January 2018, in addition to our Facebook page of the same name. Planning is underway to recognize the epidemic of Missing and Murdered: Indigenous Women, Girls and Two-Spirited Peoples, following the National Inquiry which concluded in 2019. Maamawi Collective is also looking into a project developed by members of the Mississaugas of the Credit First Nation, near Brantford, Ontario in partnership with Toronto Island Friendship Group. If you wish to help with one or more of these initiatives, or would like more information about our collective, please contact us through our website, at www.maamawicollective.ca, or phone/text 905-649-0407.
