KAWARTHA LAKES: The Lindsay and District Sports Hall of Fame will be growing by five – four individuals and a team – at the annual induction ceremony in October. It was recently announced that longtime local radio personality and hockey announcer Bob Eakins internationally awarded black belt martial artist James Martin, hockey player Hugh Cameron, local coach Dave Wakelin, as well as the 1972 to 1975 Lindsay Junior ‘C’ hockey team, will be inducted. For nearly 50 years, Eakins served as the voice of local sports in the Kawarthas, calling game action for junior hockey teams in Lindsay, Peterborough, and Little Britain as a longtime radio personality on Lindsay’s CKLY. Eakins passed away in 2018. Also being inducted posthumously, after passing away late last year, Martin was a fifth-degree black belt and won multiple medals at the World Championships, Pan Am Games and Canadian National Championships. A prolific scorer, and still active in local hockey leagues at age 85, Cameron played for provincial champions in Woodville and Sunderland. Wakelin joins his father and brother in the Hall after a coaching career at LCVI spanning more than 30 years, and including 15 COSSA wrestling team championships. The Lindsay Junior ‘C’ team was known as the Merchants, Mercurys, Cleaner and Manleys through a dominant four-year stretch from 1972 to 1975 that saw them win four consecutive league championships, and advance to the provincial championship round twice.
