SCUGOG: The Blackstock Fair is set to return to the local fairgrounds site, at 3340 Church Street, on Saturday, August 24th.
Buildings open at 9:30 a.m., with an official opening scheduled for 11 a.m. Festivities will conclude with the annual demolition derby, at 7 p.m.
“New this year, we look forward to hosting a heavy and light draft horse pull competition. Lake Scugog Historical Society will have displays of Blackstock and area history. We have a great line up of entertainment, both inside and outside, as well as AirBounce adventures joining us again, at Kids World. We have a variety of livestock shows happening throughout the day, on the grounds and the fair market to shop. There is something for everyone,” Blackstock Agricultural Society president, Mary Meyer told The Standard.
The local fair is an annual community tradition which continues to be well attended every year.
“I think it is so important to keep longtime small town fairs going. Blackstock Fair is celebrating its 157th year as a fair. This is history. It provides a connection to our rural roots and to offer a wide variety of activities while maintaining a small hometown feel, celebrating agriculture and community,” Mrs. Meyer said.
Mrs. Meyer, a member of Blackstock’s Van Camp family, has a long history being a part of this fair.
“Attending the fair every year, exhibiting, and just being a part of the day are my favourite memories. I am so fortunate to continue to make memories with my kids now, as they grow up loving the fair as much as I do,” she explained.
She also discussed her favourite part about being involved with the planning for this fair.
“I love to see the community come together to enjoy a day at the fair. I know so many people look forward to this event each year and use it as an opportunity to enjoy the exhibits, food and fun. [However,] it is also a chance to connect with the community and see people you may not have seen since the last fair.”
Mrs. Meyer stated, there are many reasons for people to attend this year’s fair.
“It is a great opportunity to learn about agriculture, enjoy a variety of entertainment, check out some cool exhibits, see some animals, and enjoy delicious fair food. Best of all, it is free. It does not get better than that.”
Admission to the demolition derby is $15 for adults and $5 for children, aged 5 to 12. For more information, on what is planned for this year’s Blackstock Fair, go online, to blackstockfair.org.
