Attitude: Why Healthy Habits Matter

This being our fourth lockdown, I’m finding I have a lot more time on my hands. I’m reminded of a quote from my favourite poem called “Attitude,” by Charles Swindoll: “Life is 10 percent what happens to us and 90 percent how we react to it.”

I’d like to share how I’m choosing to spend my time with you. I believe a healthy attitude starts within.

Here are a few healthy practices I instill every day:

  1. Healthy eating: The food you eat fuels the body and mind. I personally try to limit processed sugar, and I never eat out. Sugar is linked to higher levels of anxiety and inflammation. I prefer high quality at all times and allow myself a small treat every day.

  2. Movement Matters: I try to do a little something every day. It doesn’t have to be an intense workout routine. Exercise is linked to the release of dopamine in the brain. This is what I call, a “happy hormone.”

  3. Get out! : Don’t underestimate the benefit of nature. Fresh air is so rejuvenating! I also find it helps me sleep a lot better as well.

  4. Sleep well: Rest is when your body and mind repair. A good night’s sleep makes me feel much more positive, so I can take on the day!

  5. Feed the soul: I take time to focus on being quiet every day. I love to write and paint. It takes me out of my own mind and allows me to be creative. I can only control how I react to the situation around me. It takes time and practice. If your attitude needs a change, then it’s up to you to change it. Healthy habits foster a healthy attitude.
