A new year is upon us, and with that comes great potential for anything to happen.
As you read this, we are partway into the 365 page book representing this year, 2016. As of now, most people have likely set their resolutions for the new year or have decided not to set a resolution. However, I have a couple goals that I hope we all can accomplish this year.
First off is making more time for the ones in our lives that we truly care about. That goal could just be simple things, like calling family members or a special someone more, spending a few minutes visiting somebody or just messaging some people more on social media. As for me personally, I have challenged myself to use some of my off time to re-connect with some of the people that I have not talked to in a while.
Sometimes I think people use the excuse that our lives are so busy, and that is true. But, through good time management, our off time can be re-purposed so that you can spend a few minutes with anyone.
This can also lead to better health. A UOIT stress expert once told me in an interview that re-connecting with family or loved ones can help to reduce stress.
There is another part to this goal, where I think we should all take time away from our devices during family time. I know how important being connected is in this day and age, but from another perspective a lot of people have become too attached to their devices. Sometimes, I find the best moments in life are the small ones. Time spent talking on the couch while watching television, or playing a game of cards with family. You don’t want to miss those moments by being otherwise engaged in your device.
The other goal is to not let fear guide your decision making. Growing up, I was a very shy person, and had a hard time talking to people. But once I found my passion and through support from friends, I found a way to overcome that fear. My strategy was putting myself in situations that forced me to overcome my shyness.
I think the worst decisions we end up making are the ones we don’t make because of fear of rejection, failure or fear of change to name a few. These are the ones that I find we end up regretting later in life, that we look back on and say, ‘if only I had done this or I wish I had made this decision.’
Now of course you should factor in the consequences of any action, but I don’t think that people should be afraid to make decisions that could change their lives.
Let me close with a quote. Doc Emmett Brown said in Back to the Future III, “Your future is whatever you make it. So make it a good one.”
