KEM CEHAJIC
Special to The Standard As the smallest rep soccer club in the region, in terms of numbers, it isn't easy for our teams to win championships against clubs who have over 10 times the player pools that are available to our coaches. Beth Murray, who coaches the U14 North Durham United Football girls team, showed that with hard work, team unity, and committed players/coaches/parents, being the best is possible. On Saturday, August 26th, the U14 girls played the Oshawa Turul, in the DRSL Cup Final, which took place at the Herrema Fields in Uxbridge. Oshawa came out strong in the first half and went into break with a 2-1 lead. The NDUFC girls, after some inspiring words from the coaching staff, attacked the play in the second half from beginning to end, being rewarded with all 4 goals of the half. In the end, the North Durham girls were deserving 5-2 victors, capturing the Cup Championship. The whole squad played together as a united team and needed every player's solid contribution. Goals were scored by Nikki Stewart (2), Paige Deneve (2), and Paige Murray (1), with another all-star goalkeeping performance by Faith Smith. The League Cup Champion roster includes: Jessica Thomson, Talia Schofield, Isobel Begg, Nikki Stewart, Brittany Hackner, Emma McClure, Allyssa Chambers, Paige Murray, Morgan Palfrey, Hannah MacLeod, Paige Deneve, Briar Gerard, Madison Langdon, Maya Kromer, Jessica Tonna, and Faith Smith. Next week's column will have the full wrap-up on all the North Durham United rep teams, and will include some early information on fall tryouts for the 2018 outdoor season.
