LINDSAY: The Lindsay Muskies played an entertaining game against the Whitby Fury Friday night, but an empty net goal from Jeffery Gauld, with 30 seconds remaining, sealed a 5-2 victory for the Fury.
The Fury got off to a quick start, scoring a pair of goals in quick succession, to open up a 2-0 lead. Ryan Heeps scored from Mitchell Waldron and Patrick Demaio at 6:43, then at 7:22 it was Matt Latin from Scott Kirton and Jeffery Gauld. The Muskies then played a little more even, but, before the period ended, Whitby went up 3-0, on a power play goal at 17:34, by Justin Brand, from Kirton and Heeps.
The Fury increased their lead to 4-0 at 6:47 of the second, when Brock Welsh scored from Nick Coric and Kirton. The Muskies finally got on the board, at 15:17, when Ethan Ramsden ripped a shot home, assisted by Kyle Diamond and Ryan Smith. The Muskies looked to get closer as the second period ended, with a short two man advantage, but when the buzzer sounded they trailed by a count of 4-1.
In the third the Muskies continued to build momentum, and they were rewarded when Cam Lamport scored a power play marker at 9:57, from Cole Robbins and Cam Robinson. They looked to draw closer in a late surge with the goaltender on the bench, but a shot from in close rang off the post. Just after that, the empty net goal from Gauld, assisted by Brand and Welsh, wrapped things up.
The loss keeps the Muskies two points out of the final playoff spot, which is currently held by Newmarket. The next action for Lindsay is Sunday afternoon in Markham, then they are off to Cobourg Monday night, before heading into the Christmas break.
