SCUGOG: 14 year-old Prince Albert resident Kai Dalziel is making serious strides in the world of go-kart racing.
In late August, Kai finished third at the Canadian National Karting Championships, held at Canadian Tire Motorsport Park.
Kai has been racing go-karts for about five years. He explained to The Standard why he first started to race go-karts.
"I always liked going fast. We went to Goodwood [Kartways] and they had these rental karts and I did that a couple times I think, I had a couple birthday parties, and then I kind of just wanted to go faster,” he said.“We talked to the owner of the racetrack, and it turned out they had this program for new drivers called Arrive and Drive, and the first year I did it I won the championship, and I got a scholarship to move on to higher levels and I just went higher and higher from there."
According to the Goodwood Kartways website, Arrive and Drive, or the Canadian Rookie Karting Championship, is a “ professionally run, amateur racing league, open to racing enthusiasts of all ages.”
Kai said he was excited to make it to the podium at the Canadian National Karting Championships.
"I was just happy. To be third best in the country is just amazing. When you start off in Arrive and Drive, you don't think you are going to get that far, but then you just start pushing yourself to the limits and then you make it true to be third best. It's a special thing.”
As well as being a resident of Prince Albert, Kai is also a grade 10 student at Port Perry High School. He has previously competed in short track speed skating and downhill ski racing. At the age of 8 years old, he won bronze at the provincial speedskating championships.
Kai said his greatest supporter has been his father Dave Dalziel.
“We're very proud of him, proud of his accomplishments. Every level he's raced, he's been at the front. It's become a second job for me, taking care of go-karts. It takes up just about as much time as my primary career, but I love it,” Dave said.
Kai’s dream is to one day have a career in auto racing, such as in Nascar, Indycar or Formula One.
