The Artist Within<br>LAUREN WALKER

Happy New Year, from the Artist

Within! I know the holidays have passed, but I hope each of you enjoyed them with family. Here’s what I’ve been up to as of late.

It was a particularly busy holiday season for me, as my Christmas cards were very successful. I also managed to sell a few pieces, which was a delightful surprise. I was definitely in a creative mode and completed several winter-themed pieces. Alas, January brought me to a bit of a standstill. I wouldn’t say I was in a creative funk; my brain just needed a bit of rest.

Something is overwhelming about a blank canvas. Other artists may attest to this feeling. I had the desire to create, but I didn’t want to start something new. I decided to tackle a few projects which have been sitting on the shelf.

The first was an incomplete agave plant I started fifteen years ago. At the time, I didn’t have the skill to make my vision come to life. Patience pays off, as now it looks exactly how I want it to.

The second was a yellow flower I started ages ago. I used the canvas as a make-shift palette. Could it be saved? I managed to successfully resurrect this painting, and now it lives again! If you check out my website, I’ll feature these works in my next blog.

Interestingly enough, finishing my old work led me to start something new. I finished some Gerbera Daisies, and now I’m working on a tiger lily.

A little time and a little perspective go a long way. Maybe you find yourself in a funk? Dust off some old work and see where it takes you. Happy painting!
