New Art Gallery in Port Perry

SCUGOG: A new art gallery business recently opened in downtown Port Perry. Longtime south Durham artist Gerald Wayne McLeod opened a new gallery, on Friday, July 10th, at the former site of Camille’s Closet, at 119 Perry Street, Unit 5. Mr. McLeod said he wanted to broaden his audience by bringing his art to a North Durham location. “I thought I’d give [the Scugog community] an opportunity to see a different subject matter that is more modern, contemporary and abstract, compared to what the galleries here are selling,” he explained. As well as being a practising artist, Mr. McLeod has taught art to students and has worked as a docent at the Robert McLaughlin Gallery in Oshawa. “I’ve always been involved in the arts. This is a great opportunity for me to stay involved in the arts, with the public,” Mr. McLeod explained. Mr. McLeod is a born member of the Chippewas of Nawash First Nation. “You can see evidence of that in my work. At least a lot of people tell me they can see it,” he said. Mr. McLeod expressed, some examples of subject matter for his works could include “something that is in your dreams or something you are emotionally distraught about.” He creates a lot of his works outdoors. “A lot of them have three or four kinds of mixed media in them,” Mr. McLeod stated. He added, prices for his works will be very fair. “In a week or so I’m going to have a major sale all summer. I’m going to offer all of my original works at wholesale prices.” The gallery is open from 11 a.m. until 5 p.m. daily. For more information call, 905-243-7833.
