Durham Region installs electric vehicle charging station at its corporate headquarters

DURHAM: Durham Region recently unveiled six new electric vehicle (EV) charging stations at its corporate headquarters building at 605 Rossland Road East in Whitby.

The charging stations, located along the north wall on the first floor of the parking garage, are available for use by staff and visitors of Durham Regional Headquarters. Designated parking for electric vehicles is also available.

“Reducing greenhouse gas emissions is an economic, social and environmental priority for Durham Region, which is why we want to make it as convenient as possible for our staff and residents to make green choices such as driving an electric vehicle,” said Elaine Baxter-Trahair, Chief Administrative Officer for Durham Region.

Electric vehicle drivers—both the general public and Regional staff—can use the charging stations through the FLO app for a fee. Fees will be assessed for the time a vehicle is connected to an EV charging station, not just for the period of time that the vehicle is being charged. EV charging station users are responsible for acquiring the FLO app, familiarizing themselves with the proper and safe use of the equipment, payment of fees, and for moving their vehicle once charging has been completed. A grace period of 30 minutes will be permitted once notification has been received by a user that charging has been completed. The user is then expected to move their vehicle from the charging station spot to an available parking spot.

The charging stations were approved in Durham Region’s 2019 operating budget. The ongoing charging station maintenance will be funded in part by revenues generated by the charging stations.
