UXBRIDGE: Due to a successful test last season, councillors recently voted to continue to waive the out-of-town user fee for recreational soccer for the 2020 and 2021 seasons.
Representing the Uxbridge Soccer Club, Blayne Winter appeared before Council earlier this month to provide an update on the elimination of an extra fee for out-of-town players joining local recreational soccer leagues and the resulting success for the Club.
In his presentation, Mr. Winter provided statistics from the 2018 and 2019 seasons showing an increase in registration in both leagues which, he opined was a direct result of the out-of-town fees being waived.
“There was definitely a positive impact in both our mens and ladies leagues,” Mr. Winter explained, noting that the women’s league had seen registration increase from 62 in 2018 to 79 in 2019, including a waitlist of 35 people, with 35 out-of-town players, up from 11 the previous year. The program has seen such success that Mr. Winter added the women’s league is looking at expanding to six teams for the 2020 season.
Mr. Winter continued that the men’s league has seen participation grow, from 60 to 70 player in 2020, with 21 out-of-town players, up from 10 the previous season. “This year I haven’t even started registration, and I have five emails from five out-of-town players who are hoping to join the men’s league. We’re hoping we can again waive those fees on the recreational side once again.”
After a brief deliberation, Council voted to approve the Club’s request and waive the out-of-town fees for the next two seasons, as well as referring to staff to review all out-of-town recreation fees.
Registration for the 2020 North Durham soccer season will open later this month.
