SCUGOG: The Barn Pottery will soon be bringing pottery classes to Scugog, for people of all skill levels. Krista Sweet, owner of The Barn Pottery, first tried potting four years ago and has been in love with it ever since.
“It’s something that just focuses you in the moment. I get such pleasure from it and had no idea I would get that, so I’d like to be able to bring that feeling to other people,” she said. “It’s not something you find in the country very often, so that’s why I thought it would be unique to offer it in [this area.]”
Working with clay is a great creative outlet, and it relieves stress, according to Krista.
“It really is playing and allows you to explore your own fun side, and there’s so much you can do with clay that’s fun,” she said.
The Barn Pottery will provide a fully functional studio for the classes, attendees just need to bring their creativity and an open mind.
“Students will be provided with 10kg of clay, use of working tables, tools and wheels, plus glazes and firings… All you need to do is show up, bring your hands and your imagination,” Krista said.
Krista has developed a strong passion for pottery, and is happy to help beginners every step of the way.
“I will help facilitate the learning process, from wet clay right through to the finished glazed piece,” she said.
Krista told the Standard, working with clay is a really unique and gratifying experience. Working the wheel and creating something with your hands that can be taken home and used, is very satisfying.
“There’s nothing like handmade crafts, things that you make with your hands [and give] to someone,” Krista said.
She encourages people who have never tried pottery to sign up for lessons and give it a try.
The Barn Pottery will be offering classes on week nights, two hours a week for 10 weeks, starting in January. Classes will be intimate in size, no more than four people per class, so there will be lots of one-on-one learning with Krista. The cost to enroll in a 10-week class is $300, which works out to $30 a class. With a website in production, anyone interested in enrolling in a pottery class can contact Krista directly at Krista_Sweet@live.ca.
