NORTH DURHAM: Durham Basketeers’ Drop-off Day is Saturday, November 3rd, from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. at Greenbank Centennial Hall, 19965 Highway #12, Greenbank.
Each year, violence and abuse drives more than 100,000 Canadian women and children out of their homes and into shelters. Basketeers is generous group of around 3,500 volunteers with large hearts. Our mission is to provide some of the simple necessities and niceties of life, bundled in a basket and gifted to women as they embark on the next chapter of their lives.
More than 17,000 women have received a ‘New Beginnings’ basket since 2000. Last year, the four shelters that we represent received a total of 175 generously donated baskets!
We invite everyone to be part of this special day, bring your basket(s), stay for a while, enjoy some refreshments, visit with other Basketeers and meet representatives from our Region's four shelters. So mark your calendars and start spreading the word.

UXBRIDGE: On September 29th, people will be taking to the Uxbridge trails, for the fourth annual 'Sunrise Walks the Uxbridge Trails', to support Sunrise Pregnancy & Family Support Services.
Sunrise Pregnancy & Family Support Services is a charity organization with a number of programs to provide resources and support to North Durham mothers.
“We definitely fill the gap [in services] in this area,” Program coordinator Esther Veens said.
One of their most popular programs is the weekly Parenting Support Program, where they can learn from professional guest speakers, and peers and discuss topics like positive parenting, healthy living and other relevant topics to them.
Pledges and donations from the walk-a-thon go to support their programming.
“It’s one of our main fundraisers of the year,” Ms. Veens said. “It’s really a beautiful walk.”
The route will be stroller and wheelchair accessible, so everyone can participate.
“It’s really a community event,” Ms. Veens said. “So, the more people we can get out the better.”
Sunrise Walks the Uxbridge Trails will be September 29th, at Herrema Blvd, in Barton Farms, at the Soccer Fields. Sign in starts at 9:30 a.m., and the walk will start at 10 a.m., rain or shine.
After the up to 5 km walk at 11 a.m., there will be a BBQ lunch, along with children’s activities, a bake sale, raffle draw and a prize for the highest pledges.
Previously, the walk-a-thon has raised $5,500 at their walks, and they would love to increase that amount for this year. “If we could get 100 walkers, and raise $10,000, that’s our big goal,” Ms. Veens added.

See the people and places of your community through new eyes in the upcoming exhibit "Picture Port Perry" by Jonathan van Bilsen. The opening Reception will begin Saturday, September 29th, 2018 at 2 pm. The show will run September 29th through to October 25th, in the Kent Farndale Gallery, in the Scugog Memorial Public Library at 231 Water Street in Port Perry.
Mr. van Bilsen is a talented local photographer and author who is celebrating the successful launch of his latest book, “Picture Port Perry”, which highlights the residents and landscapes of the Scugog area. This exhibit will display many of the photos and stories from his book and serve as proof that, despite visiting 99 countries across the globe, Jonathan continues to be passionate about his community here at home.
The Lindsay Agricultural Society (LAS) was formed in 1854, for the purpose of encouraging an awareness of agriculture and promoting improvements in the quality of life of persons living in the agricultural community and beyond.
Throughout the society’s 163 years, it has remained loyal to its mandate, consistently promoting the agricultural community and forging ties through the region, with service clubs, youth groups, and other organizations. The LAS annually hosts the Lindsay Exhibition, the fourth-largest agricultural fair in Ontario.
The new LAS facilities have hosted numerous other shows and events, including: prestigious livestock shows, agricultural specialty shows, home and craft shows, trade shows and consumer shows; all of which add strength to the fabric of the community and agricultural life.
The goal of the Lindsay Agricultural Society is to present agriculture in a manner, both educational and entertaining to the rural and urban population.

The Lindsay Agricultural Society, is the governing body of the Lindsay Exhibition.
The Lindsay Exhibition is a five day event, commencing each year on the third Wednesday following Labour Day.
The LEX is a not-for-profit, charitable organization, run by the support of our vibrant community, donations, and volunteers.
Over 30 committees and 300 volunteers work together to stage the annual Exhibition and other events.
The Lindsay Exhibition is the single largest annual event in the City of Kawartha Lakes. Average annual attendance is approximately 45,000.
As host of the East Central Ontario 4-H Championship Show, the Lindsay Exhibition is a qualifying event, for 4-H members to compete at the Royal Winter Fair in November.
Supreme Champion beef animals, at the LEX, qualify to enter the Canadian Western Agribition in Regina, SK, Canada’s largest livestock show. The only other event in Ontario with qualifying spots for Agribition is the Royal Agricultural Winter Fair.
Average of approximately 7,000 entries each year.
The LEX is a member of the North American Six Horse Hitch Classic Series Inc., and competitors earn points towards competing at the North American Championship Finals.

Warm weather often inspires renewed vigor in decorating or organizing a home. People who live in apartments, small homes or condos or those who have embraced the "tiny house" movement must rely on clever decorating to maximize their spaces. Here are some ideas when space is at a premium.
Go vertical. Utilize vertical space, such as lights hung on a wall beside a bed instead of lamps on a nightstand or bookshelves and other shelving to keep items off of the floor.
Bench seating: Benches can provide more seating when entertaining guests and also can be moved to the living room or elsewhere as needed. Place a small bench in a foyer and put some wicker bins beneath for storage.
Utilize natural light. Rooms that have ample light can seem more spacious. Pull up blinds (or skip them if privacy isn't an issue) and use the sunshine to help spaces appear more airy.

Many homeowners wish they had more storage space, and kitchens are one area where people seemingly can always use more storage.
Despite a desire for more kitchen space, until recently, kitchen pantries fell out of favor. Builders and architects may have thought that close proximity to supermarkets as well as multi-use cabinets in kitchens would offset the need for pantries. But according to a recent survey from the National Association of Home Builders, a kitchen pantry is the most desirable kitchen feature for buyers in the market for a new home.
According to a 2016 survey from ReportLinker, 98 percent of Americans say cooking at home is their preferred way to prepare a meal. And despite the wide array of restaurants, prepared meals and fast food options nearby, more than one-third of people cook at home daily, with nearly 50 percent cooking between three and six days a week.
In order to accommodate for spending more time in the kitchen, homeowners are directing additional attention to kitchen preparation and storage features. In fact, one recent trend in kitchen renovations is creating custom-designed pantries.
Locate the appropriate space
Ideally, pantries should be in or adjacent to the kitchen. But not every home layout allows for this setup. Some homeowners need to move storage pantries into the garage, the basement or a mud/laundry room.
Various factors should be considered before placing a pantry outside a kitchen. What is the climate? Will food spoil? Is there a possibility that vermin or insects can infiltrate the room and access food? These factors will dictate whether to have closed cabinets, air-tight bins or open shelves or if other modifications must be made to the room prior to building.
Choose the type of pantry
Accessibility is essential in a pantry. Everything should be easily reached and grabbed as needed without having to move too many things. Ideally, foods should be arranged in a single layer so that all items can be viewed at a glance. Shelves of various depths and heights can accommodate items of different sizes. Adjustable shelves are ideal because they can be modified as foods change. Sliding drawers can improve reach in cabinets.
In smaller spaces, French door-style reach-in cabinets are convenient and flexible. In complete kitchen remodels or new constructions, walk-in pantries offer the most space and flexibility.
Pantries serve different functions in different homes. For the bulk shopper, a pantry with plenty of room for large items will be needed.
Lighting can be beneficial in all pantries. Lights can improve visibility when trying to locate items. Others prefer an outlet for charging hand-held vacuums or other small appliances. Counter space in the pantry enables homeowners to unload groceries directly onto pantry shelves.
For pantries located outside of the kitchen, built-in freezers can maximize storage possibilities, especially for those who freeze-and-eat after bulk shopping ventures.
Pantries are popular features that homeowners can customize depending on their storage needs and the amount of time they spend in their kitchens.
KAWARTHA LAKES: The Board of Directors for Lindsay Little Theatre are pleased to recently learn they have been awarded a $25,500 Capital Grant by the Ontario Trillium Foundation.
Funds from the grant were used for improvements to the Theatre’s 55 George Street West studio. The grant was used to upgrade the electrical system, replace the furnace and install air conditioning. The project was completed in July, 2018.
“The Lindsay Little Theatre has contributed to the culture and heritage of our community and supported a number of local charities for more than five decades,” said Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock. “This Ontario Trillium Foundation grant will be used to upgrade the facility ensuring this community treasure can continue to thrive and help those in need for years to come.”
The Board is especially thrilled about the air conditioning component of the grant. In the past, show schedules were adjusted because of the heat in the building. With the planned improvements, programming and scheduling of Spring, Summer and Fall shows can be more flexible. Patrons and participants will be able to enjoy the theatre year-round, in comfort.
Lindsay Little Theatre is a community theatre group, operated solely by volunteers. It has a proud history spanning more than 50 years of high quality theatrical and musical productions. The theatre provides opportunities for the community to experience and learn about live theatre in an intimate, accessible setting.
The Ontario Trillium Foundation (OTF) is an agency of the Government of Ontario and is one of Canada’s leading granting foundations. OTF awarded more than $120 million to some 700 projects this year, to build healthy and vibrant Ontario communities.
SCUGOG: Greenbank Folk Music Society fans are excited to know, Russel de Carle will open our 2018-2019 season. Mark the date on your calendar: Saturday, October 13th. The show will commence at 8 p.m.
In addition to performing as the lead singer and bass player of Prairie Oyster, rewarded with six Juno Awards, more than a dozen Canadian Country Music Awards, and enough gold and platinum records and number one singles to fill a living room wall, Russell has been writing, singing and recording with the Bebop Cowboys, as well as touring his third great solo album, 'Alone In This Crowd'.
He will be bringing to the Greenbank audience all his love and appreciation for the roots of honky tonk and pure country music, as well as the classic country vocalists.

KAWARTHA LAKES: Cable Cable, a local telecommunications company, the Lindsay Agricultural Society, and the Boys and Girls Clubs of the Kawartha Lakes (BGCKL) have joined forces to send local families to the 164th annual Lindsay Exhibition (LEX).
Hosted by the Lindsay Agricultural Society, the LEX is the fourth-largest agricultural fair in Ontario and attracts thousands of people each year.
“For many families, attending the LEX is a nostalgic outing which signifies the transition into fall, and serves as an important way to stay connected to their community,” says Harry Stoddart, General Manager of the Lindsay Agricultural Society. “We’re happy to work with Cable Cable and the BGCKL to help facilitate this experience for local families.”
Through an exchange of services partnership, the Lindsay Agricultural Society and Cable Cable have arranged to donate ten single day family passes to the BGCKL. The Club plans to divide the passes between local families who utilize their services, their 2018 Summer Camp attendees, and the Youth Leaders who help run their programs.
