LINDSAY: The 13th Annual Trish’s Wish Walk-a-thon takes places this Saturday, June 4 at the Victoria Park Armouries in Lindsay. Registration starts at 9 a.m. and the walk starts at 10 a.m.
The park will be shared with the ‘Love Of Lindsay’ group, who will provide fun activities for all attending. There will also be a barbeque after the walk is complete. The walk-a-thon features a 5-kilometer and 12-kilometer course. Participants are free to walk, run, or ride their bikes.
Trish's Wish provides support and financial assistance to families residing in Kawartha Lakes, who are in crisis as a result of a serious illness or injury to a family member who is between the ages of 17 and 25. The foundation’s mission is to seek the support and participation of the community through activities and provide assistance to those in need whenever possible.
“I would say there is a high demand for assistance from Trish’s Wish. Whether it is a wheelchair, a ride to doctor’s appointments, financial assistance, there is always someone who can use the support,” said Roseanne Leblanc of Trish’s Wish. “Sometimes it can be an emergency and we receive a text from someone in need.”
Recipients can either request funds for themselves or other people can request on their behalf.
In 2004, the community of Little Britain and surrounding areas organized a 12-kilometer Walk-A-Thon to raise funds for a young lady from Little Britain, Trish Peter. Trish had been fighting cancer since March 2000, and sadly lost that battle on July 30, 2004. It was Trish's wish that this event should carry on in future years to help others in a similar position and the foundation has since helped 28 families and given $200,000.
The foundation is always looking for help. “We are always looking for volunteers and board members. It is tremendously rewarding. Trish’ Wish is a grassroots, local organization that can always use an extra hand,” said Ms. Leblanc.
Trish’s Wish would like to also thank the community and local businesses that have made the walk-a-thon possible, including, Bob FM and Kawartha Business.
