UXBRIDGE: A recent act of vandalism that damaged a bridge beyond repair has led the township to close a section of the Barton Trail.
According to a press release from the municipality, the trail will remain closed for the remainder of 2016 and into next year. The structure has been deemed unstable after vandals tore a railing off the bridge, which provides the lone point of access to the trail across a stream connected to the Barton Farms' stormwater management pond.
According to Facilities Manager Bob Ferguson, replacement of the bridge is costly, and there are not enough funds budgeted this year to cover the cost of repair. Mr. Ferguson added that the matter will be brought forward for discussion during 2017 Municipal budget deliberations later this year.
Witnesses to acts of vandalism, including this crime are asked to report to Durham Regional Police at 1-888-579-1520 or anonymously to Crime Stoppers at 1-888-222-TIPS or on-line at www.durhamregionalcrimestoppers.ca.
