UXBRIDGE: Following recent concerns from business owners in Uxbridge, about garbage being left out on Brock St. overnight, Council approved a motion to ask the Region of Durham to change the garbage pickup time on that street, from 7 a.m. to 10 a.m.
The decision was made at a meeting held on Monday, Dec. 5th.
“I think that this is long overdue,” Mayor Gerri Lynn O’Connor said. “After that last wind storm, the downtown looked just revolting.”
Ben Kester, the Township’s Director of Public Works, asked if Council was concerned about having the garbage truck in the live lane.
However, Mayor O’Connor said having the truck there could deter the gravel trucks from coming through the area.
As well, Council has asked Durham Region to fine those who put out their garbage too early. An amount of the fine, which would be issued to the building owner, has yet to be determined.
Mayor O’Connor said there needs to be a “zero tolerance” policy, for those who put out their garbage too early.
Ward 4 Councillor Fred Bryan said the frustrating part about this situation is that the BIA works hard to make the downtown look nice, but then “the garbage blows down the street like tumbleweeds” whenever the Township experiences high winds.
