SCUGOG: United Way plans to keep the Olympic spirit alive, next month, to raise awareness for various support groups in North Durham.
United Way’s 9th Annual BBQ & Tour de Perry Trike Race returns to Perry St., on Thursday, Sept. 8th. The ‘Tour de Perry,’ pits local businesses against each other, on tricycles, to compete for the ‘Tour de Perry’ trophy, to raise awareness for the Port Perry United Way. “It isn’t a fundraiser, but an event to let people know that the United Way will start collecting donations in September,” said Cheryl Henderson of Port Perry United Way. The United Way funds several local support groups in the area, so those groups can focus on providing support services to the community.
During the time of the interview, Cheryl already had 16 teams signed up for this year’s race. This is the most teams to have ever signed up for the event, and yes, The Standard will be racing this year. Also, Durham MP Erin O’Toole and Durham MPP Granville Anderson will be facing off against Port Perry Mayor Tom Rowett and his team from the Township of Scugog.
Ms. Henderson would like to remind the public, that this is a free event, and the local community is encouraged to come out and cheer on their favourite local businesses. The Scugog Lake Stewards will be on hand, cooking and handing out free burgers, while the races commence.
Port Perry United Way supports many local groups in North Durham. These groups include: Community Care Durham, Big Brothers Big Sisters of North Durham, Community Living North Durham, North House Shelter, and Precious Minds Support Services.
Several local businesses are sponsoring the event. Vos’ Independent are donating their barbeque as well as hamburger buns for the event. Maple Leaf Foods is donating all the hamburger patties, Foodland is donating all the pop and water, and PP Print donated the flyers for the event.
Crusty’s Pizza is donating free pizza coupons in support of the United Way.
Local musician, Irwin Smith, will be providing the entertainment for the day.
The Port Perry United Way’s 9th Annual BBQ & Tour de Perry Trike Race is a free-fun filled event, open to the public, and kicks off on Thursday, September 8th, from 12:00 p.m. to 2:00 p.m. The race will take place on Perry St. (between Queen St. and North St.).
