NORTH DURHAM: Before settling into Thanksgiving weekend, local food banks are appealing to residents to help fill their shelves.
Across North Durham, there is a need for donations ahead of the holiday weekend at Operation Scugog, Uxbridge’s Loaves & Fishes Food Bank and the Brock Community Food Bank.
Among the popular items that are often needed by local food banks so that they can fill the order of their clients are sugar, tea and coffee; canned items such as pork and beans, vegetables, and fruit; hot and cold cereal, rice, Kraft Dinner, dry pasta and sauce, peanut butter, cheese spread, juice, canned tuna and salmon, as well as snack items that can be packed in school lunches.
The food bank also greatly appreciates donations of non-food items such as diapers and wipes, shampoo and conditioner, toilet paper, toothpaste and brushes, dish and laundry soap and deodorant.
Monetary donations can also be made, which allow the food banks to stock up on staples such as milk, bread, meat and eggs for its clients in the area.
While local food banks are grateful for every donation they take in, residents are reminded to double check expiration dates on items prior to dropping them off.
Donation boxes are located at all grocery stores in North Durham including Vos’ Independent, Vince’s, Foodland, Zehrs, Freshmart and Food Basics.
