SCUGOG: Described by locals as a “hidden gem of the ridges,” Summerlea Golf Course in Port Perry is well on its way to solidifying a new, and positive reputation in town. Amy and her husband bought the 18-hole, 3,250 yard golf course, which was originally opened 30 years ago, and were determined to turn it into a local success story.
Amy, who is only 27 years old, is the sole owner of the golf course, which she told The Standard is rare in this industry. “It was in a little bit of rough shape when we bought it,” said Amy. “We have our liquor license back and a new restaurant, and banquet hall,” continued Amy.
It just so happens that Summerlea also has an all-female staff that Amy ensures was completely accidental. “I am an equal opportunity employer, but it just happened and we’re super happy with it,” said Amy.
Summerlea offers local golfers natural rolling hills and landscapes, with mature trees and beautiful surroundings and various golf leagues to keep golfers busy throughout the season. They have a 9-hole Ladies League on Tuesdays, A Men’s League on Wednesdays, and a Mixed Social League on Thursdays. “I would say our Ladies League is one of the largest in the area, with well over 100 participants,” said Amy. Registration is $50 for Ladies League and $60 for Men’s League. Registration includes various perks such as free meals, prizes and more.
One of the more surprising and popular attractions Amy has noticed take Summerlea by storm are weddings. Amy attributes the recent popularity with the beautiful and unique landscape of the golf course. “Most people don’t expect the wedding venue and are really surprised,” said Amy. “We have a wooded hilltop ceremony site. You can almost see Lake Scugog from it, way up on the hill,” she continued.
