SCUGOG: The Ontario Lottery and Gaming Corporation (OLG) announced, on Tuesday, August 8th, they have chosen Ontario Gaming GTA LP (OGGLP) as the service provider for three casinos in the Greater Toronto Area (GTA).
OGGLP is made up of two companies, the Great Canadian Gaming Corporation and Brookfield Business Partners LP. It will run the GTA gaming bundle, which includes: the Great Blue Heron Casino on Scugog Island; Slots at Ajax Downs; and OLG Slots at Woodbine, for a period of 22 years.
The closing date of the acquisition of the assets from OLG is early next year.
According to a press release, Great Canadian and Brookfield will each hold a 49 percent interest in the consortium, and Clairvest Group Inc. will have a two per cent interest.
“We will bring our capabilities in operations, development and retail to the partnership to deliver expanded gaming options and premier entertainment that will enhance the experience of patrons and contribute to the surrounding communities,” Brookfield Business Partners CEO Cyrus Madon said, in the press release.
Chuck Keeling, Vice President of Stakeholder Relations and Responsible Gambling at Great Canadian Gaming, explained to The Standard the partnership does not want to reveal their plans for the GTA bundle before they speak to a long list of stakeholders.
“We don’t want key stakeholders to hear about our plans through a third party, like the media,” he said, stressing the importance of “strong, active relationships” with these stakeholders.
Mr. Keeling called the award of the GTA bundle a “historical milestone” for the company and said OGGLP is a “strong partnership for the GTA marketplace.”
Chief of the Mississaugas of Scugog Island First Nation Kelly LaRocca said they are “very eager and excited” to meet with members of OGGLP.
“We look forward to working together as a team, to come up with an economic development strategy,” she said, adding she expects this partnership to bring the “growth and development [the first nation has] been waiting for, for some time.”
Combined, the three casinos in the GTA bundle have over 4,000 slot machines and 60 table games. They employ 2,200 people.
