LINDSAY: Earlier this week, Laurie Scott, MPP for Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock, confronted the Wynne government in the Legislature, asking how rural Ontarians can trust them to deliver hydro relief now, when hydro rates have gone up more than 400% on their watch, since 2003.
The answer she got was dismissive and arrogant, just like yesterday’s cynical attempt to buy Ontarians off with rate relief a year ahead of the election.
But after 14 years of total mismanagement, Ontarians have had enough, and won’t fall for the government’s scheme.
“Over the past eight years, skyrocketing hydro rates have dominated the work of my constituency office. The energy poverty, caused by this government, is out of control, with seniors and working families in my riding being forced to make the impossible choice between heating their homes and putting food on the table,” said Scott.
Scott points out that average monthly hydro bills in rural Ontario have been more than triple the average of $135 the Wynne government has quoted.
Instead of providing real relief to rural Ontarians, the Wynne government’s electricity plan will only further burden future generations with the cost of their terrible policies. Ontarians will be on the hook for an extra $25 billion in interest payments, for the cost of electricity over 30 years, all in a ploy to save this government from electoral defeat.
