UXBRIDGE: Local youth between the ages of 8 and 12 can get a jumpstart on recreation at a new special event later this month.
On Friday, Nov. 20, the first-ever Uxbridge Jumpstart Games will be held at the Arena from 9 a.m. until 3:30 p.m.
The day, which is a PA Day for local schools, will feature a host of events focusing on physical activity on and off the ice, games and nutritional education, at no cost to participants.
“This is going to be an exciting day for the youth of Uxbridge,” noted Pat Higgins, the owner of Canadian Tire Uxbridge and one of the event’s organizers. “This is totally funded through the Uxbridge chapter of Jumpstart. We’re hoping to build it into an annual event here in Uxbridge, wether it’s in the summer or winter, we want to hold a Jumpstart Games every year and have another great event for the kids of Uxbridge.”
Throughout the day, volunteers from several organizations including BodyFit Health Club, Uxbridge Youth Hockey and the Uxbridge Bruins will lead drills to improve skills, with participants grouped in teams of 25 according to their age and skill level.
To save on time, on-ice activities will only use helmets, skates and sticks instead of full equipment.
Please note during registartion if any pieces of equipment is needed, and organizers will work to provide it, so that everyone has a chance to play.
Mr. Higgins also added that there will be some special celebrity guests on hand throughout the day.
Former NHL player and local resident Gary Roberts will be on hand during the day to offer his personal advice on training, fitness and nutrition.
“In addition to his help with the fitness program, Gary and his team have been involved with helping us put together some healthy meals and snacks for the participants,” added Mr. Higgins.
As well, at the end of the day, Toronto Maple Leafs mascot Carlton the Bear and Dan Pollard from Hits 105.5 FM will be on hand for a special pep rally.
Space for the Jumpstart Games is limited to 300 participants. Registration forms can be found on-line at www.town.uxbridge.on.ca or www.uxbridgeminorhockey.ca.
Paper copies of the form are also available to be picked up at Uxpool or Canadian Tire Uxbridge. Completed forms can be dropped off at Canadian Tire or the Uxbridge Arena.
