KAWARTHA LAKES: Last week, Ontario PC Critic for Women’s Issues, MPP Laurie Scott joined Kawartha Haliburton Victim Services and Cathy Allan Ladieswear for their ‘Fashion with A Voice’ fundraising event, in support of human sex trafficking survivors.
“Kawartha Haliburton Victims Services does incredible work providing emotional and practical support to victims of crime in our community, and I thank all those who supported Fashion with A Voice, especially Liz Grimes and her team at Cathy Allan’s,” MPP Scott said.
“Only since December, KHVS has helped 20 local victims of human sex trafficking, as well as their families. That is a shocking statistic, and we need to raise awareness of this crisis in our community,” MPP Scott added.
It is clear, Lindsay and the surrounding areas are not immune to human sex trafficking, which has become one of the fastest-growing crimes in Canada. Over 93% of victims are Canadian-born, averaging the age of 14, but sometimes as young as 11.
“I will continue to advocate strongly on behalf of organizations like KHVS, to ensure that they receive the support that they need from the Government of Ontario, to help victims of human trafficking,” MPP Scott concluded.
