UXBRIDGE: Ontario’s largest free family fishing event is set to return to the shore of Uxbridge’s Elgin Pond next weekend as Huck Finn Fishing Day marks its 13th year in the community.
On Saturday, April 25, the community is once again invited out for a great fun-filled day of fishing on Elgin Pond, which will be the home of 100’s of Brook trout just waiting to be caught by any participant 15 years of age and under.
Once again, the Huck Finn Parade will kick-off the event. Starting at Elgin Park at 9 a.m., all children and parents are encouraged to dress up in your best Huck Finn outfits. Decorate your bikes and wagons too. All parade participants will be entitled to a VIP fishing area after the parade. As well, there are lots of special prizes for those participating in the parade!
Fishing will get underway at 10 a.m., and once again organizer Pat Higgins of Canadian Tire Uxbridge is expecting a tremendous turnout for the event, which he has seen grow from humble beginnings in 2002, to the largest free family fishing event in Ontario. There are some fantastic prizes for those who don’t take part in the parade as well. Participants have a chance to win a prize and are guaranteed a fun filled day of fishing. Bring your equipment, and organizers will provide the bait to all registered participants.
“It’s something that everyone wants to do, or at least try. And, it’s a great event, because it really seems to bring the entire community together. We’re at the point now that kids that came when we first started are bringing kids of their own, and that’s just great to see and be a part of,” said Mr. Higgins.
Pick up your ribbon ahead of time at any of the following locations around Uxbridge: Uxpool, Uxbridge Legion, ‘Presents, Presents, Presents’, Blue Heron Books and Canadian Tire. You can also get them at the Pond on the day of the event. If you don’t have any gear the Pickering Rod and Gun Club will be pleased to lend it to anyone age 15 and under.
Huck Finn Fishing Day, sponsored by Canadian Tire, is supported by the Ministry of Natural Resources, Uxbridge Township, the Royal Canadian Legion, the Uxbridge Optimist Club, Zehrs, the Pickering Rod and Gun Club, the Ontario Federation of Anglers and Hunters Zone “G”, the Uxbridge BIA and the Durham Regional Police Service.
