SCUGOG: Highway Hydroponics recently opened in Port Perry.
"It's an indoor growing store, but we also have soil amendments for outdoor growers. We carry lights, ballasts, nutrients, bucket systems, flood and drain table systems, everything you need to grow inside,” Store owner Gary Durocher told The Standard.
Mr. Durocher said people can grow a number of things with hydroponics systems, such as vegetables, herbs, and tropical plants.
"Usually everyone automatically assumes marijuana when they hear hydroponics, but a lot of people grow tomatoes, cucumbers, I've got peppers in my window growing, beans, peas.”
He also stressed that people can ask him any questions about hydroponics, adding that he gets the most satisfaction from helping out customers.
Mr. Durocher was immersed in gardening throughout his life.
"My dad was an organic gardener, so I grew up with gardening, so it probably stemmed from that. I wanted a job I could do myself, that I had knowledge in and didn't have to rely on other people [for], and I didn't want to work for anyone else. I also like to watch plants grow,” he said.
Mr. Durocher has plants growing in front of the window of his store to showcase how the hydroponics systems work.
Highway Hydroponics offers unique items that can’t be bought at big chain supply stores.
"You can't just go to Canadian Tire and buy the things that I have in the store,” Mr. Durocher said.
Highway Hydroponics is located at 1894 Scugog St. onics is located at 1894 Scugog Street.
