SCUGOG: The Township’s Councillors cost taxpayers almost $237,000 in 2015 according to a report by the finance department.
The report was shown to council at their meeting on Monday, March 7 as part of the Township’s dedication to transparency. In total, council’s expenses, benefits, and salaries cost $236,987.
Mayor Tom Rowett made a total of $35,425 in remuneration, as well as $6,765 in benefits. He had $2,512 in mileage expenses and $3,752 in conference costs. The Mayor also had a cellphone bill of $498.
Ward 3 Councillor Don Kett had the second highest total of remuneration, benefits and expenses at $34,252. This includes the highest mileage costs out of all of Scugog’s elected officials at $2,758 and the second highest conference costs, just behind Mayor Rowett, at $3,064.
Ward 2 Councillor Janna Guido was paid $31,552, Ward 1 Councillor Betty Somerville made a total of $31,546, Ward 4 Councillor Wilma Wotten had a combined total of $31,535, and Ward 5 Councillor Jennifer Back was paid $31,460.
Regional Councillor Bobbie Drew had council’s lowest total of remuneration, benefits and expenses at $27,690. This includes a salary of $23,869 and $2,965 in benefits. She claimed just $558 in conference costs, $186 in mileage expenses as well as $112 in cellphone costs.
Each ward Councillor received a salary of $21,674. Councillor Back had the highest cellphone cost of $666.
Council had previously asked staff to look into council remuneration in early February as it was said they were “grossly behind.”
