SCUGOG: Port Perry based company Communicate Freely has been making progress towards their internet project for the Township of Scugog.
According to System Operator Tim St. Pierre, on Thursday, Oct. 6th, they were able to place 1040 metres, of 144 fibre cable, that stretches from their office, located at 181 Perry St., to a vault at Water St. and Highway 7a.
The cable that was installed will provide service to local businesses along Water St., Casimir St. and Mary St. The first dozen of these are expected to receive service before the end of the month.
The duct network installed has seven tubes, each capable of carrying one of these cables. An identical cable will be blown as far as the causeway, once the province has finished with the Highway 7A construction. According to Mr. St. Pierre, one cable will have the capacity to service the entire Scugog Island area, with room left over.
From the causeway, the company expects to then splice to an aerial cable that can be hung on Hydro One's existing poles, and then go back to the underground cable on the other side. The company has recently received permits , addressing this particular method of accessing the Island, as well as for some of the neighbourhoods on Scugog Island, this week.
Mr. St. Pierre said, Communicate Freely is now turning its sights towards Spring Blvd., Ambleside Dr. and Gerrow Rd., which are expected to be built later this year. Portview cannot be built, due to a pending drainage project that would interfere with the construction, but they are exploring temporary service options to connect residents there.
There may be some construction work continuing into the winter. Tim hopes the weather holds long enough that he can get all of this done before it gets too cold. Construction, up Island Road, will resume again in the spring, enabling Communicate Freely to provide service to areas as they pass them.
Mr. St. Pierre said, he expects to have at least a few customers on Scugog Island with the service by December, but added that it will take until the Summer of 2018 to connect everyone.
Communicate Freely's current Internet packages are available, with speeds up to 250 Mb/s. They are also offering digital telephone service, and their digital television service is expected to be launched sometime this winter.
