SCUGOG: Volunteer Scugog Firefighter Chris McAuley recently received the 2015 Port Perry Firefighters’ Association’s Firefighter of the year award.
The PPFA has been an established Association for over 29 years. The members each year decide who they feel best represents the criteria of; attendance to fire department functions and events, respect and leadership qualities amongst other firefighters, active involvement in organizing community events, commitment to improving self as well as department, and heroic and outstanding performance by the firefighter on and off duty.
Mr. McAuley, a former Professional Wrestler and a current Real Estate specialist, is also a father of two. He says that he wants to be a real role model for them.
“This is a life lesson that they now see, hard work and dedication pays off in the end,”
Michael Waller PPFA President said that Mr. McAuley was the right type person to give the 2015 award to, as he exemplified many of the award criteria.
“When I handed out this award at our annual dinner I was extremely happy to present it to Chris, all of his hard work and efforts, the commitment he has made and personal sacrifices to be there, he definitely deserved it,” he said.
Mr. McAuley was humble in his acceptance speech, noting that it is the team that truly makes a difference in the local community.
“I spent over 10 years in pro wrestling and I loved the comradery of being with the guys, but this is different to me. Being a firefighter isn’t just about that it’s also about trust, respect and having each other’s back 24/7 on and off calls,” he said. “This helps make our hard jobs and what we see and deal with on a daily basis not so much easier, but comforting knowing the guys are here for each other.”
Mr. McAuley added that he is “not in it for the awards” but that it is nice to be recognized with this prestigious award. The Port Perry fire hall is located at 30 Crandell St.
