SCUGOG: Scugog’s annual Canada Day celebration attracts over 16,000 visitors to Port Perry. It is the largest single day event and boasts a full day of interactive activities, entertainment, food and fun for all ages.
The 149th birthday of Canada takes place on Friday, July 1 in Palmer Park and along Water Street from 11 a.m. to 10 p.m. Special Events Coordinator, Julia Penney spoke to The Standard about what people can expect at this year’s event.
This year’s celebration features several live music, an arts and crafts festival, local vendors, a parade supporting the armed forces, fresh food, and of course fireworks.
The event kicks off at 11 a.m. with the ‘Support the Troops’ Parade featuring veteran support group ‘Vettes4Vets,’ and will come down from Port Perry High School and briefly stop in front of the Post Office.
The opening ceremony will take place at the gazebo in Palmer Park.
A big part of the day is live music. Headlining the event is local singer Rory Taillon, who has performed at the Old Flame Brewery in downtown Port Perry. Also performing is country artist, Diane Chase, local rhythm and blues band GANK and The Extension Cords, and Canadian pop-rock band Terry Crawford and The Retro Rockets.
Tons of local food vendors will be feeding the hungry crowds throughout the day including: Daddy Mike’s Fun Foods is returning this year, along with The Nutty Chocolatier, and the Chipper Truck.
To keep the kids busy throughout the day will be a jumping castle, giant connect 4, checkers, and face painting.
The Scugog Council of the Arts will be on hand with some of their artists and art displayed in the park and to cool off, the Birdseye Pool will also be open from noon until 6 p.m., free to the public.
Fireworks begin at 10 p.m. and are sure to impress. The Township of Scugog would also like to thank Platinum sponsors, Greenwood Mushroom Farm and Martyn Mini Hoe Waterproofing, as well as all other sponsors for helping to make the celebration possible.
