DAN CEARNS The Standard
KAWARTHA LAKES: Barbara Doyle is hoping voters in the Haliburton-Kawartha Lakes-Brock (HKLB) riding vote for change in the 2019 federal election.
Ms. Doyle was elected the NDP candidate for the riding by members of the local riding association, on Saturday, February 23rd.
Ms. Doyle is a co-founder of the Kawartha Lakes Health Coalition, and has also served on the Board of the Victoria County Historical Society for the Olde Gaol Museum. She will be “focusing on a platform that fights for change and progress in areas of affordable housing, universal Pharmacare, justice reforms, skilled trades and implementing robust climate policies that include fighting for an aggressive transition to green alternatives and moving away from carbon-intensive industries, while also addressing limiting trade policies that go against Canadian interests” according to a press release.
“I’m very honoured to be nominated by the membership, and I look forward to representing the constituents of the riding,” Ms. Doyle told The Standard.
After a strong showing by NDP candidate Zac Miller in the last provincial election, and Andrea Horwath leading the provincial NDP to official opposition status in that election, Ms. Doyle feels the NDP have a strong chance of unseating incumbent Conservative MP Jamie Schmale.
“Zac ran a tremendous campaign,” she said. “I see that trend continuing to the federal election.”
Ms. Doyle stressed communicating with residents in the riding is important to her.
“I don’t believe we can tell people what they need, we need to listen to [find out] what they need and find solutions,” she explained.
She later added she feels the federal government’s focus should be “the health and welfare of the entire country, not just the one per cent.”
What Ms. Doyle feels separates the NDP from the other federal parties is “the NDP follows through on their platform” and looks at “much more people based” solutions.
