The thing is, I believe in absolute truth. Whether this can be applied to the idea of politics is the question I guess. I do believe there are matters that are contextually dependent, but I wouldn’t go as far to say I believe in gray areas. Because of this, I believe things are either right or wrong, and I don’t think there’s a lot of mystery involved in figuring out which is which. Consequently, I can have some pretty strongly held convictions, that I’ll readily defend. I think sometimes though, I can end up triggering my defence mechanism when I’m not even being questioned.
Investing unhealthy amounts of time in politics, especially in this day and age, can bring out the worst in many of us. It's no wonder politicians have such a difficult time containing themselves, they're way more invested than the average person. I think it’s good for us to want to engage in discussion about where our country, and communities are headed. But I think it’s important we learn to keep our emotions in check, and to know our emotional limits and maturity levels.
We also need to pick our battles. Is every political issue really an issue I need to have a personal viewpoint on? And if I have a viewpoint on the subject, do I need to actively express that viewpoint, or is it just a viewpoint I can rest in, myself? If our country was deciding whether or not to go to war, I think it’s a topic worth having a stated opinion on. But when, where, how, and who I express that opinion to, makes a big difference. If the township wants to put up a stop sign, I really think that’s not worth debating about.
We elected people to do a job, let’s let them do it. Rather than nitpicking, let’s find the good in what our politicians are doing. Yes, even the politicians we personally voted against, or don’t agree with ideologically, deserve some level of respect. After all, politicians are just people like you and me, with feelings, families, hobbies, and beliefs of their own. So to our politicians and public servants, all the way from the local council chambers to the federal government, thank you for what you do! I’m praying for you! God bless!
