UXBRIDGE: Jumpstart will be taking over the ground around the Uxbridge arena, and filling them with sports, games, and fun activities, this Friday.
The Second Annual Summer Jumpstart Games will feature, field hockey, volleyball, tennis, wheelchair basketball, and a BBQ along with fun and games.
Participants will be split into 15 different groups and will cycle through 6 to 7 different sports and games
“Its great learning at a young age, for those kids to get exposure to different sports and different activities,” said Pat Higgins, one of the event organizers. “Last summer we had our first outdoor summer games in Elgin Park, and everyone just had a blast,”
The event is 100% volunteer run and free of charge, but parents are asked to pre-register their children, at Uxpool, located at 1 Parkside Drive. After registering, participants will receive a free jumpstart t-shirt and hat to wear to the games.
Mr. Higgins expects over 200 children to attend the event and has 60 to 70 volunteers working hard to make it all happen.
He said, “We have lots of people that want to step up and help.”
The Uxbridge Tennis Club has agreed to come out and help facilitate the tennis section of the games.
“The Uxbridge Tennis Club is looking forward to getting out and exposing kids, at an early age, to the great sport of tennis and what it’s all about,” Mr. Higgins said.
The Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association will be at the event as well, and will be running the wheel chair basketball game station.
“Having the Ontario Wheelchair Sports Association over there will be pretty cool because they’ll be there to help the kids learn how to operate the wheelchair and at the same time have a lot of fun,” Mr. Higgins said.
The Toronto Maple Leafs official mascot, Carlton the Bear, will be making a surprise appearance at the event as well. The 6’4”, 270-pound polar bear will be walking through the grounds, and supporting the participants as they compete.
The event will run from 9:30 a.m. until 2:00 p.m., with a BBQ in the middle, from 11:30 a.m. to 1:00 p.m. Mr. Higgins encourages all families with children to come out and enjoy the games.
