SCUGOG: Mayor Tom Rowett will not run for re-election in the 2018 municipal election.
“I made it very clear that I am not running for a followup term,” Mayor Rowett told The Standard, following council’s meeting on Monday, May 29th. “I’ve made it clear to council, I’ve said it many times to them, that I love being the Mayor, I like all of the responsibilities that come with it. But, as I near the end of the third year, I feel like I am putting everything into the decisions that we make knowing that I don’t need to worry about an election, I don’t have to appease people that I ultimately want them to vote for me.”
Mayor Rowett added the fact he is not running for re-election has allowed him to make decisions which are “not political” and “not fence-sitting.”
“They’re decisions that I feel are best for the community, they’re ones I can sleep at night with, and I know that I’ve done the best possible job I can do with all the information I have,” he said.
Mayor Rowett also said he’ll have plenty to do once his political career is over.
“I’ll have lots of time to catch up and spend on the local businesses that I own, and my son’s going off to university. I knew I wasn’t going to be a career politician going into this, so I’m pleased with all of the wonderful things this council has done as a whole, the senior staff are excellent, I think we have a lot to be proud of.”
The mayor said he hopes council can get more things done before their term expires in 2018.
“I’m hoping we can check off as many boxes as possible,” Mayor Rowett said.
