KAWARTHA LAKES: 18 year-old Oakwood resident Sadie-Jane Hickson was recently announced as the first runner up in the Canadian National Exhibition’s (CNE) 46th annual Ambassador of the Fairs Competition.
The competition was held from Friday, Aug. 18th until Friday, Aug. 20th. Ms. Hickson competed against 50 contestants in the three-day competition. The contestants were judged on criteria such as: knowledge of the CNE and Canadian agriculture, public speaking, self-confidence, poise and their overall impression.
“I was so excited. My goal was to make the top 7, and then when I was named in the top 3, that was even better,” she said. “I don’t think I could have had a better CNE experience,” Ms. Hickson said.
She also explained one of the positives of competing in the competition.
“Speaking in front of an audience is something you always have to take in stride, and the more experience you get, the better you are at it,” she said, adding she also learned how to walk across the stage gracefully in high heels.
Looking back on her experience, Ms. Hickson said there is nothing she would do differently next time, stating, she was happy with the way she competed.
