SCUGOG: Megalore group would like to thank all of the residents in the local community, who have made donations, attending their events since their inception in the fall of 2014.
“We can’t thank the people who have donated to Megalore enough. It is all of you that make this all worthwhile,” said founder Lynn Doucette.
Megalore group is a non profit organization, of caring individuals in the community, who strive to help people in the local Scugog community. Lynn said that her and her husband, and organization president, Jim Doucette were inspired by a similar group in Uxbridge, known as the Gorgons community group.
“Jim and I were driving for a designated driving service for a few years and saw the wonderful things they were doing helping just the local people in their community,” she said. “Jim and I talked about starting the same here in Port Perry as we were very aware of the need in our community.”
Jim said that he was fully supportive of his wife’s vision for the group.
"I thought it was a good idea and we could participate in helping our community, giving back instead of taking,” he said.
Lynn said that the name of the group was inspired by a member of her husband’s family.
“I said to Jim, I want a name for the group, and he was in the kitchen with me and he said, ‘like what?’ and I said ‘I don't know.’ He blurted out Megalore and I said ‘that’s it.’ I turned to him and I asked where that came from and he said it was his great great grandfather's first name,” she said.
Megalore has supported two young cancer survivors, residents with vision problems, a senior in need of dental work, the family that recently lost everything in a house fire and others.
Megalore group runs multiple events throughout the year, with all of the proceeds staying in Scugog Township. The group will be holding their annual “Spring Fling Dance” on Saturday, May 14 at the Latcham Centre in Port Perry from 8 p.m. until 1 a.m. Cost of admission is $20. Tickets can be purchased at Envoy Business Centre.
There will be a cash bar, late lunch, 50/50 draw, DJ, and local firefighter, Todd Soomre will be providing the music.
For ticket information, call David at 905-982-2700 or Lynn or Jim at 905-985-4372.
Lynn said that it is the reactions of the people receiving the donations that makes what Megalore is doing truly worthwhile.
“As soon as you see their smile or a happy tear in their eye, knowing that they are going to be helped with no questions asked, it's just a nice relief for us,” Lynn said.
Megalore currently has a board of four people. They are Darlene Hlozan, John Nuefeld, as well as Jim and Lynn Doucette.
Megalore group is looking for golfers for their upcoming tournament on Sunday, July 10 at Sunnybrae Golf Club.
The registration cost is $100 which includes a barbecue dinner, 18 holes, use of the golf cart as well as lots of prize opportunities.
The group is also looking for volunteers. For more information, contact Lynn or Jim at 905-985-4372 or e-mail firstname.lastname@example.org.
